Because Materie carries pieces from makers around the world, international orders may be subject to customs duties, import taxes, or additional fees when your package arrives. Here is what you need to know before you order.

Will I owe customs duties or taxes?
It depends on where you live and what you order. Materie works with a customs agent to expedite international shipping — which means duties and taxes are handled on your behalf and billed directly to you by Materie, either at checkout or upon delivery.

Why are duties or taxes billed either at checkout or upon delivery?
Duty rates vary by country, product category, declared value, and current trade agreements, and they shift frequently. Some product categories can be calculated at checkout; others require us to wait until the item clears customs, at which point we bill you directly. We can provide an estimate based on previous rates upon request, and all duties and tax documentation is available to you at any time.

We also list the country of origin on every product page so you have the information you need to anticipate potential costs before placing an order.

Do you mark up duties and taxes?
No. We pass the fees directly to you without any markup.

Where can I find accurate duty information?
Start with your government's official customs authority:

What if I refuse to pay the customs charges?
If a package is refused or abandoned due to unpaid duties, or returned to us damaged after being held in customs, we aren't able to offer a refund. We'd rather you know this before you order than be surprised after — which is why we're laying it out plainly here.
