Materie Home seeks out makers whose values and vision align with our own: craftsmanship, sustainability, and a meaningful connection to material. That’s why our collaboration with Hangai Mountain Textiles feels so aligned. From the moment we encountered their hand-combed cashmere and yak down throws, we were impressed by their commitment to slow, responsible luxury. Based in Basalt, Colorado, Hangai partners directly with herders and family-run mills in Mongolia, ensuring their textiles carry forward a story of care at every step. We’re proud to partner on our Hangai x Materie Home Fisherman Knit pillow collection and to share their insight into why textile choices matter—deeply.
We believe that the textiles in our home shape not only the look of a room, but how we feel and engage within our spaces. To dive deeper into this idea, we spoke with Hangai’s owner, Betina Infante, whose purpose-driven brand works exclusively with natural fibers. Known for their exquisite blankets, throws, and accessories knit from hand-combed cashmere, yak down, and baby camel fiber, Hangai honors both tradition and sustainability. Betina shares her perspective on why textile choices matter, and how thoughtful sourcing can transform not just spaces, but lives.
Q: Why are textiles so important in interior design?
Hangai: Textiles do far more than furnish a room. They are the sensory layers that shape how we feel and interact with our environment. A well-crafted blanket offers softness, and it carries the story of where it came from and how it was made. At Hangai, we believe that warmth, texture, and movement invite connection to a place, to people, and to the natural world. Our textiles help create spaces that feel deeply personal, grounded, and alive.
Q: How can textiles impact the way we feel in a room?
Hangai: Textiles can create a feeling of comfort and serenity. For example, a cashmere throw draped over a chair invites you to rest and relax. Bold patterns, meanwhile, can energize a room with rhythm, personality and artistic flare. These tactile and visual elements guide how we inhabit our homes.
Q: What are some concerns with mass-produced textiles on the market today?
Hangai: Many mass-produced fabrics are treated with chemical coatings, often containing PFAS—sometimes called “forever chemicals.” These substances resist stains, but can pose serious health and environmental risks because they don’t break down easily. They can accumulate indoors and impact air quality, contributing to long-term exposure that’s especially concerning in places where people spend the most time—like their homes.
Q: How does Hangai Textiles approach textile sourcing differently?
Hangai: We prioritize natural, undyed and unbleached fibers. We design blankets, throws, and accessories knit and woven from hand-combed cashmere, yak down, and baby camel fiber—a traditional harvesting method. Our production is done by Mongolian-owned firms (all of which happen to be family-owned) so that our supply chain partners—herders, washers, spinners, and knitters—benefit most from partnering with us as we grow together.
Q: What does it mean for a textile to “age gracefully”?
Hangai: Unlike synthetic or heavily treated fabrics, high quality, natural fibers can be timeless. Yak, cashmere or baby camel throws often soften with use and care. This aging process reflects the quality and integrity of the material, encouraging a slower, more meaningful relationship with your belongings rather than treating them like disposables.
Q: Why is the story behind a textile important?
Hangai: Every fiber has a story of the landscape where it was grown, the traditions of the makers, and the intention behind its creation. When you bring a special textile into your home, you’re connecting with that tradition and craft—it’s like a piece of art that connects you to a story of a different world.
Q: How can customers experience the values of Hangai in their own homes?
Hangai: When a customer brings a Hangai throw or pillow into their home, we hope that they experience what we stand for: authentic, natural luxury that’s purpose-driven. It’s not just how it looks—it’s how it makes you feel: connected and luxuriously comfortable. Our textiles become companions to daily comforts, whether it’s wrapping up in a cozy throw to read or resting your head on a cashmere pillow to watch your favorite film—it’s essential to feel at home.
